Summary

Ailesse and her friends change the afterlife in the gripping conclusion to the fantasy duology that began with Bone Crier's Moon from New York Times bestselling author Kathryn Purdie--perfect for fans of Stephanie Garber and Roshani Chokshi。 Now available in paperback。

Love is a matter of life and death。

Bone Criers have been ferrying the dead into the afterlife for centuries, a dangerous duty only possible with the powers they gain from sacrificing their amours, the men destined to love them and die。 But Bone Criers Ailesse and Sabine--along with Ailesse's love, Bastien--are working to chart their own course and rewrite the rules of the afterlife。 If they don't break the soul bond between Ailesse and her amour, she could die--just as Bastien's father did。

Sabine struggles to maintain her authority as matrone of her famille--the role always destined for her sister--even as she fights to control the violent jackal power within her。

Bastien is faced with a new dilemma as the spirits of the Underworld threaten the souls of his friends--and his father。

Ailesse attempts to resist her mother's siren song as she's drawn into her own version of the Underworld。 How will she save her friends once she's cut off from their world?

This pulse-pounding follow-up to Bone Crier's Moon is a story of love, sisterhood, and determination as three friends find the courage and power to shatter the boundary between the living and the dead。

DNF。 I loved the premise of the world but I could barely get through the first book, but the second book was even worse。 There is no chemistry between the characters, the world is underdeveloped。

3。5 🌟A solid conclusion to the duology? The first half of the book was rather boring, if I say so myself, but it picked up as the story progressed。 Similar to my thoughts on book one, it did not have any kind of unique aspect to it, but when it picked up, it entertained me until the very end。The end neatly tied up in a bow, no string left untied, Sabine, Bastien, Aileen and Cas all got their very own happy ending which I was glad for。 The romance and the love triangle could have been so much bet 3。5 🌟A solid conclusion to the duology? A very satisfying end to the series! I loved the emphasis on sisterhood and female friendship in this book, along with seeing the inward conflicts of comparison/insecurity/imposter syndrome。 Something I wanted to mention was connections to Christianity that this book/series has! (if I included it here it would definitely spoil a big chunk of the story) Reminds me a little bit of how C。S。 Lewis incorporated his beliefs into the world of Narnia :) 。。。more

This was a different and fun two part series。 A lot happened in this book and I’m not sure I understood all the ins and outs of the back stories of the gods, however, I was still fully invested in the characters and their story。 The ending felt complete and I was happy with how it all turned out。 I would rate this book PG - only a few kisses but talk of killing and some mild violence in a “battle” scene。

I feel like this was nonstop action, adventure, romance, and trying to kill or rescue each other。True, maybe some people might find the first half of the book a bi slower paced, but I really loved Sabine and Bastien's determination to rescue Ailess, so I found it hugely enjoyable to watch them go to extremes to save their loved one。And yes, everyone was suitably dramatic and wholly invested in their goals, which I really liked, and I didn't mind so much because most of the characters were teenagers and when are teens ever reasonable? I WANTED the drama。 I wanted the conflict。 A book without conflict is boring。 Having them care about their goal made me care about it。And the stakes in this were so high! It felt like in the first book it was just the will-they won't-they of Bastien and Ailess needing to kill each other。 In this, the team were literally trying to save the world。 I loved how the author made the whole plot about this fucked up worldbuilding! Make everything terrible and then make everyone fight to fix it。 Wonderful! I think I liked it so much because I was invested in this world。I haven't said anything about the audiobook narrators because they were just perfect, and at least this time there was no weird quality issues with rerecordings。Although I kind of want a third book just because I want to prolong my stay in this world, I also appreciate its beauty in finishing as a duology。 I just want to live in this world and be friends with these people。 I feel personally victimised that this is fiction。 I am genuinely going to miss these motherfuckers。 。。。more

I enjoyed it。 I liked the first one and think this was a great continuation。 The characters weren’t annoying and the action was nice。 It was well paced。 I like the idea of going against the destined soulmate trope and all。 Really enjoyed the two main girls and the magic system was interesting。 It was a good ending。

Overall I’d rate this entire Duology as 3。5 stars。 The magic system is cool。 The characters are ok, the plot is also ok。 Maybe it’s a little too YA for my taste, but overall it was a fine read。

BONE CRIER'S DAWN is the next book on my (slow) quest to clear my shelves of long-lingering books。This is the book that very clearly shows that, for all the advertising of the series as a fantasy romance, it isn't really。 The little Library of Congress description in the first book is definitely more on point; this is a series about friendship and saving each other。 And this book ups the stakes by having the girls grapple with various consequences and desires for power, all while dealing with su BONE CRIER'S DAWN is the next book on my (slow) quest to clear my shelves of long-lingering books。This is the book that very clearly shows that, for all the advertising of the series as a fantasy romance, it isn't really。 The little Library of Congress description in the first book is definitely more on point; this is a series about friendship and saving each other。 And this book ups the stakes by having the girls grapple with various consequences and desires for power, all while dealing with supernatural threats。I did enjoy the somewhat OTT feel of the plot, the increasing "how can this be even more dire?" question as plot point after plot point happened to throw all plans awry and make it worse。 By just embracing all the twists and turns (and not letting the reader have enough space to go "hang on a minute") the ever escalating danger and problems turns into a fun ride towards the finale。As well as the original core cast returning, we have (relative) newcomer Cas and a larger, returning role for Birdie。 New/bigger parts cast members helped avoid stagnation as the old core cast were already known, and had found an equilibrium between them emotionally。 Cas in particular tossed a lot of new dynamics in。Thankfully the potential love-triangle set up with Cas was diverted quickly, feeling a bit like it was being set up to have it and then the author thought better of it。 The "groundwork" for it is all there (complete with the stirrings of jealousy on Bastien's behalf) but then the relationships take a left turn and all the work just sort of goes nowhere。 I was very glad that it did go nowhere, but it makes some the relationship pacing a bit wonky due to that "blip。"In all, it was an enjoyable finale and I'm glad I did eventually get around to it。 。。。more

It's almost been exactly a year since I read the first book that I read this one。 I did remember a lot of the first book。 I enjoyed this one too but it was a bit chaotic。 It was a lot of running around to different locations and a bit of craziness。 I loved Sabine in the first book but I found her a lot more annoying in the second one because she kept making annoying mistakes throughout the book。 But I did really like the way it ended and it felt like a good conclusion of the series。 It's almost been exactly a year since I read the first book that I read this one。 I did remember a lot of the first book。 I enjoyed this one too but it was a bit chaotic。 It was a lot of running around to different locations and a bit of craziness。 I loved Sabine in the first book but I found her a lot more annoying in the second one because she kept making annoying mistakes throughout the book。 But I did really like the way it ended and it felt like a good conclusion of the series。 。。。more

More of a 2。5 star。 I've read worst YA fluff, but this one seriously missed the boat。 Or, more appropriate, it took the same boat of #1 back out, but then forgot to pay attention to keeping the story moving and scuttled the whole thing。 Sabine is a completely different person now, selfish and power hungry (anyone else get sick of the ultimately unused jackal grace being a poorly contrived excuse to make her character inconsistent), Ailesse lost all her spunk, and now we have teenagers who think More of a 2。5 star。 I've read worst YA fluff, but this one seriously missed the boat。 Or, more appropriate, it took the same boat of #1 back out, but then forgot to pay attention to keeping the story moving and scuttled the whole thing。 Sabine is a completely different person now, selfish and power hungry (anyone else get sick of the ultimately unused jackal grace being a poorly contrived excuse to make her character inconsistent), Ailesse lost all her spunk, and now we have teenagers who think they can take down millennial old gods just with their underdeveloped teenage wits and one kid who reads books? I did end up reading the sequel after all!Overall, I don't think it's a bad duology。 I liked the characters well enough, I still find the general set-up intriguing, and the ending was fairly satisfying。I am still, however, annoyed at the fact that nothing seems to happen without someone making just the stupidest decision in their life。 Surely plot could be pushed along by something even remotely rational? Sometimes?Anyway, not a bad read。 Would recommend generally to anyone interested in fairly I did end up reading the sequel after all!Overall, I don't think it's a bad duology。 I liked the characters well enough, I still find the general set-up intriguing, and the ending was fairly satisfying。I am still, however, annoyed at the fact that nothing seems to happen without someone making just the stupidest decision in their life。 Surely plot could be pushed along by something even remotely rational? It usually doesn't take me this long to finish a book - that says something about how busy I've been and how this book failed to grip me。 I felt that it dragged a bit and there were too many repetitive things (descriptions and fight scenes in particular) that pulled me out of the story。 However, that being said, I think that Purdie did an excellent job of wrapping up this duology in a satisfying way。 Her world-building is rich, most of her characters are nuanced, and there are some great conflic It usually doesn't take me this long to finish a book - that says something about how busy I've been and how this book failed to grip me。 I felt that it dragged a bit and there were too many repetitive things (descriptions and fight scenes in particular) that pulled me out of the story。 However, that being said, I think that Purdie did an excellent job of wrapping up this duology in a satisfying way。 Her world-building is rich, most of her characters are nuanced, and there are some great conflicts/stakes in the book。 Not a set that I will own but one I will recommend to those I know enjoy this sort of story。 。。。more

That was actually a really good ending so I’m giving it 3。5/5 stars but WHY ARE THERE SO MANY KIDNAPPINGS!? Also I just wasn’t buying the whole “I love you in life and death” thing when the two MCs were apart for so much of the book and we never even get to see them fall in love, not really。 Like, what do they even like to do in their spare time aside from guiding the dead to their final resting place and planning revenge?
